From October 5th to 9th, the 65th International Statistical Institute (ISI) World Statistics Congress (WSC) was successfully held in The Hague, Netherlands. Organized by ISI and hosted by the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions, this Congress was large in scale, featuring keynote speeches, over 180 Invited Paper Sessions (IPS), more than 80 Contributed Paper Sessions (CPS), and poster presentations. Over 1,000 papers were presented, with more than 1,500 delegates in attendance. Upon the invitation of the Congress organizing committee, Associate Professor Ying Liu and Associate Professor Chang Xie from School of Statistics, along with Dr. Xuecheng Huang, Assistant Research Fellow from the Northeast Asia Economic Research Institute of Dongbei University of Finance and Economics(DUFE), participated in the academic activities at the 65th WSC.
On the afternoon of October 7th, the IPS titled "Methodological Mechanism Mining of International Comparison Program: How Emerging Economies Contribute to the Global ICP Is Possible," co-organized by DUFE's International Comparison Program (ICP) research team, was successfully held. The ICP is an economic statistical activity with the widest participation and largest scale among global economies. It serves as a crucial source of economic statistical data for global economic governance by international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank, and is also an important platform for the international community to observe and understand China's economy. DUFE's ICP research team has long been dedicated to research on cutting-edge theories, methodological issues, and statistical practices in the field of ICP, providing significant intellectual support for China's participation in the ICP. The relevant research findings have been endorsed and recommended by Professor Prasada Rao, an expert from the World Bank ICP Technical Advisory Group, Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and Emeritus Professor at the University of Queensland. The ICP team has continually participated in five WSCs and co-organized ICP sessions at three of them. This ICP thematic session was convened and chaired by Professor Qiu Dong, a distinguished Chinese statistician and a member of the World Bank's 8th round ICP Technical Advisory Group. It was moderated by Professor Yafei Wang from the School of Statistics at Beijing Normal University, with commentary provided by Professor Nan Zhao. The session featured four invited presentations. Among them, DUFE’s ICP team members Associate Professor Chang Xie and Dr. Xuecheng Huang delivered presentations titled "An Improved Chain Method for Multilateral Price Comparison" and "Measurement Study on Influencing Factors of Rental Price and PPP of Inter-city Dwelling Services in China," respectively. The Manager of the World Bank's ICP Project Department, officials from Norway Bureau of Statistics, and experts and scholars from other countries participated in this thematic seminar. The content of the presentations was highly commended by the discussants and fully recognized by the Manager of the World Bank's ICP Project Department, earning international acclaim for the domestic statistical discipline.

Held biennially since 1887, the WSC is recognized as the premier academic conference in the global statistics community. It aims to bring together statistical experts, innovators, and practitioners worldwide to collectively shape the future of data science and statistics. The themes of the 65th WSC covered a wide range of topics, including big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and data science, official statistics, economic and productivity measurement, climate statistics, business statistics, challenges and opportunities brought by ChatGPT to statistical research and education, agricultural statistics, price indices, and innovations in statistical methods.
During the congress, DUFE faculty members attended numerous IPSs and CPSs aligned with their research interests and teaching needs. This experience provided them with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the latest research trends and cutting-edge achievements in the international statistics community. Through extensive interactions with global experts and scholars, they actively promoted the development of DUFE’s statistics discipline in terms of academic advancement, talent cultivation, and research innovation, further enhancing cross-border university exchanges. These faculty members’ participation served as a bridge to convey China's perspectives and showcase DUFE’s academic reputation to the international statistics community. The insights and resources gained from the congress will provide valuable support for the construction and development of DUFE’s statistics discipline, playing a positive role in promoting the university’s statistical research achievements, facilitating international exchanges for the discipline, and strengthening its international influence.
